I think they're equally important. Both are required for the continuance of life. Mitosis is required for the preservation of a given individual; meiosis is required for the preservation of a species. For somatic (body) cells to reproduce and preserve the individual, mitosis must occur. But for an organism to reproduce, it must produce cells, which means meiosis must occur.
