What are the practical reasons for keeping the electoral college in the modern day?

It usually provides a clear winner. We do not want a recount of over a 100 million votes in close elections. It also allows the cost of campaigning to be restrained because it can be concentrated in swing states but some see this as a flaw. There are also powerful argument against it. I think the best solution would be to have the election decided by igning electors by Congressional district and to get rid of the winner take all by state.
